Youth Credit Card FAQs
-
Can my parent or guardian apply for me?
No. You must be present at the branch and apply as the primary borrower. Your parent or legal guardian will apply with you as the joint borrower.
-
Do I have to already be an Industrial Credit Union member?
No. You need to be eligible for Industrial Credit Union membership, but your membership can be established as part of the application process.
Anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in Washington State is eligible to become a member!
-
Do I have to complete the Teens and Money course?
Yes. The free BALANCE: Teens and Money course must be completed before your Youth Credit Card receives final approval.
-
What credit limit can I get?
Youth Credit Cards are available with a $500 or $1,000 credit limit, subject to credit approval.
-
Will my Youth Credit Card build my credit?
While you are under 18, the account will not be reported on your credit profile. Credit reporting for the youth borrower is suppressed until age 18.
The account will be reported under your parent or legal guardian’s credit profile as a regular tradeline because they are a joint borrower. Account activity, including payment history and balances, may therefore affect their credit.
After you turn 18, if the account remains open, its full history (including payments made before your 18th birthday) will appear on your credit report.
-
What happens when I turn 18?
You'll need to sign a new credit card agreement as a legal adult. We'll provide information about completing this process when you approach your 18th birthday.
